Naija Notes: When OBJ speaks…

by Toni Kan Onwordi

“A diplomat is someone who thinks twice before saying nothing” Anon

When OBJ speaks every serious minded man must take cover.

And I am not talking about the release of bullets (authentic Naija slang for grammatical errors.)

I am talking about tactlessness and lack of diplomatese. OBJ needs someone to teach him how to speak especially in public (and to stop that annoying throat clearing and lip licking)

Blame it on his military background and you have a point but when you consider all the time he spent hobnobbing with his friends Jimmy “Omo Catarrh” Carter and Andrew Young and you begin to wonder whether there isn’t something to that jazz about taking the man out of the gutter and not taking the gutter out of the man.

To put it mildly OBJ appears in-educable. Saw him on CNN’s Q&A with Verjee and when the lady told him that 10,000 people had died in civil crisis since OBJ took over, the Otta farmer almost shut her up with a quip that came straight out of a military camp. What he said amounted to: “10,000 people out of 120m. haba, Zaine, dat na insignificant number.”

As we say in Bendel State, shame just catch me!

And once again I bring you wise words from OBJ. In an interview he granted a short while ago, OBJ said the decision to allow the Abachas keep part of the loot they stole from Nigeria after agreeing to return about N1bn to the FG’s coffers was the most difficult decision of his life.

Well, OBJ may just have to tell us under what circumstances that decision was reached because matriarch of the Abacha clan, Mariam Abacha has said there was never an agreement between her and the FG. Mohammed Abacha savoring the air of short-lived freedom has also said that there was never an agreement between him and the FG.

Well, that was before he was clamped back into jail.

…………………………………………………

On Thursday Sept 19, Mohammed Abacha was released from detention following a ruling by an Abuja court warning the FG not to re-arrest the poor rich man. Well, the FG had him re-arrested and the man did not waste any time in going to court to enforce his fundamental human rights.

Mohammed’s father, Sani Abacha must be turning in his grave and looking for someone to explain to him what ” fundamental human rights” means.

This democracy is a wonderful thing o.

On the night of Sunday 15th September fire broke out in a rubber factory in Ikorodu. Five days later the exact number of lives lost has not been ascertained, but estimates say over 100 people died.

The factory situated in Odongunyan village in Ikorodu is called Super Engineering Company and is owned by Chinese business men who were in the habit of locking the gates to the factory as soon as the workers resumed.

This was responsible for the high death toll as they were all trapped in the burning building.

Respected legal luminary Chief Afe Babalola who is representing the company says that no more than 18 people died but he has failed to tell us where the over 70 people who signed in for the night shift have gone too.

Lawyers!

Nigerian footballers are missing. Ok, the NFA has not been able to reach them. I am talking about our contingent to the WAFU tourney-taking place in Ivory Coast.

For those just coming in from Mars, soldiers protesting their retirement mutinied in Ivory Coast abducting the sports minister and wife of the Interior minister.

In the melee former Head of State Robert Guie got himself killed.

These soldiers…

And yes, Ghali Naaba again. Statistics made public recently show that in three years, the House of Reps received 105 bills. Only 20 were passed.

Meanwhile, Naaba who is under investigation by the Anti-Graft Commission (the man has gone to court to stop the investigation) had enough time on his hands to go to the police station in Abuja to protest the re-arrest of Mohammed Abacha.

Cal it a brilliant career move. There must be life after the House of Reps, abi?

And still on these clowns who call themselves lawmakers. (Dis )Honourable Zani Ruwa of Zamfara state should be back home by now. The member of the House of Reps had been cooling his heels in a Saudi jail for months. The man was caught trying to bribe Saudi authorities in a failed bid to spring his uncle who was in a Saudi jail. But that was not all, the man was also caught with fake dollar bills. His invocation of diplomatic immunity did not faze the Saudis.

His arrest sparked off a minor diplomatic row that saw Dubem Onyia earning his fat pay for once.

Any way, the FG finally got its way and the man was released. Now, what I want to know is this: what does Sharia law say about bribery.

Gov Sani Yerima, where are you?
