Sabella Ogbobode Abidde

Please, do not ask me about religion. I get the evil look every time I tell people I am an agnostic who teeters on atheism. My world resolves around ethics and the rule of law. That’s it. I have no use for religion: religious convictions are not part of my existence -- the laws of man are good enough for me. I have lived in several cities: Seattle, Miami, Norman, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Saint Cloud, the District of Columbia, Houston, and Mankato. I am not sure where I am going to live next. And I have never really had a profession, only jobs: been a cook, a dishwasher, a civil servant, house cleaner, university instructor and researcher and so on and so forth. Every so often I get questions concerning the role and place of the African woman. Well, I don’t know; at least not with any certainty. What seems to work best is when both partners work as a team: cooperate, coordinate and collaborate their marital efforts. And they should be mindful of the insidious effect of modernization on the African family.

Suggesting Military Democracy for Nigeria

Why do we then refer to Nigeria as a democracy? We know for instance that Nigerian elections are never free and fair, that the peoples' rights are regularly abridged, and that the press and the judiciary are not independent and free to function within the dictates of the constitution, and that it is strenuous entering and exiting the political system...

Bullies and Hypocrites in International Politics

The US, France, China, Britain, France, Russia and the State of Israel can all develop, transfer, buy, or exchange sophisticated and deadly weapons, including nuclear weapons; but Iran, Cuba, and North Korea and a host of other countries are not allowed to do so. The hegemons can destroy and destabilize other countries without incurring penalties; but other countries dare not...

Funsho Williams: Another Senseless Killing

Dele Giwa. Alfred Rewane. Marshall Harry. Bola Ige. Jerry Agbeyegbe. The list goes on and on and on and on. It never stops. Will it ever stop? And now, Chief Funsho Williams, killed in the comfort of his home. Why?

Lebanon: Destruction Beyond Comprehension

There are those who believe that the actions of a state in pursuit of its national security objectives can not be considered terrorism. Well, that is false!

Reuben Abati and the Nigerian Guardian

My angst with the Guardian is that in spite of its stated and unstated goals, and considering the resources at its disposal, has not lived up to its billing and potentials. It is simply not enough to declare one's enterprise the flagship of Nigerian journalism...

Understanding the Middle East Crisis

Today, no one seems to remember why “terrorism” began in the first place. No one seems to remember that for upward of six decades the Israelis, with the tacit approval of the United States, have refused to grant the Palestinians statehood...

The history of the Nigerian Police is a history of nobility, service and sacrifice. It had a glorious past. In recent years, however, the police have come to be known as the bastion of illegality, inefficiency and institutional decadence...
