Akunyuli was from South Eastern Nigeria and Merkel was born in Eastern Germany.
Nigeria until recently had the largest economy in Africa and Germany the largest economy in Europe.
Whilst the Nigerian day of independence is October 1, the German Day of unity is October 3.
