In a Way…It Happened This Monday

by Sabella Ogbobode Abidde

Somehow, we’ve gotten used to rendezvousing at night. Night after night we meet in the telephonic orb; we meet to talk about things, we talk about the kind of things friends and lovers talk about: life and ideas and aspirations and fears and the light in our heart. You know, it is really easy to talk to someone you feel affection for. I do. And she does.

I walk in her moon; she walks in my sun. David Viscott it was who said “To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.” That’s so true! It is true because that’s the way things have been ever since we met. Night after night after night she calls, or I call. This Monday, it happened again. Her call melted my heart; and I in turn enveloped her soul.

Aimee-Zoë: Hello Darlin’

Me: Hello Sweet-heart!

We talked about this and about that and about intermestic politics, and about books and some emerging paradigms. She was fascinated about a book I had recommended, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics by Mearsheimer; and so we talked about it. We also talked about a book she had recommended, Man, the State, and Warby Kenneth Waltz.

That we could talk about virtually every subject under the sun was one of the qualities that endeared me to her. Suddenly, suddenly she said: “Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely,” to which I responded, “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be”

Aimee-Zoë: Yes…Yes…I will….I will…Who is the author…?

Me: Robert Browning….

And so we talked some more about things like her years in college and the time she was in the Peace Corps in the Congo (before going on to law school). She didn’t finish law school because, half way through her program, she decided her life could be better spent as a pharmaceutical researcher. And so she left Wisconsin for Yale.

“By the way: have you booked your ticket, or you’d rather I come visit…?” she asked.

Me: Oh, I sent you an email this afternoon; my boss rejected my request for vacation…

Aimee-Zoë: That’s ok…I can take the week off next week…

Me: That’s great…

Aimee-Zoë: My frequent-fliers miles…

Me: What day, time and airport…?

Aimee-Zoë: I’ll let you know tomorrow…

Me: Sounds great…

Aimee-Zoë: I was looking forward to you coming, but now I look forward to visiting…

Me: There are so many places to see in this town…New York…

Aimee-Zoë: Been there on numerous occasions…It’s you I want…

Me: You have me, always! So you’ve been to the Big Apple…

Aimee-Zoë: Yap, several times…this time around, it’s you…you and me…

Me: Whatever you want and however you want me, I am all yours, sweet-heart…

Aimee-Zoë: Love you honey…

Me: I love you, too…

Aimee-Zoë:I was thinking…I was wondering whether…if…

Me: Yes?

Aimee-Zoë: I was wondering if…if you’d be interested in sex…

Me: Oooohhhhhh yessssssssssssssssssssss…when you get here…any time!

Aimee-Zoë: I mean now…sex on the phone; but next week…I’ll be all yours…

Me: Phone sex? Ooohhhhhh yeeesssss…Is your curtain drawn?

Aimee-Zoë: Yes…dimmed light …drawn curtains…door is closed…

Me: And the music…?

Aimee-Zoë: No…no music…just your voice…your voice and your commands…

Me: Sweet…sweet…you ready?

Aimee-Zoë: …will always be ready; waiting for your lead…your commands…

Me: Good girl…good girl; now, I want you to…

…WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD…A WONDERFUL WORLD IT IS…
